It is hardy to zone (UK) 7. The species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. Suitable for: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil. Suitable pH: acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. Cultivation details
Succeeds in a fertile well-drained soil in a sunny position[200]. Plants are not very cold-tolerant[188], but they can be overwintered outdoors in areas where winter temperatures do not fall below about -5°c[200]. This species is cultivated as a vegetable in China[200].
