Recent publications from the Chinese University of Hong Kong have shown that Gynura segetum contains pyrrozolidine alkaloids, which cause serious liver damage in humans and animals. In the ill people they have seen, Gynura segetum has been mistaken for Sedum aizoon, a harmless source of the Chinese medicine 'Tusanqi'. It does not appear safe to recommend G. segetum as a medicine. See: Lin, Ge et al. Hepatic sinusoidal obstruction syndrome associated with consumption of Gynura segetum. [Review] Journal of Hepatology. 54(4):666-73, 2011 Apr. Some of the earlier publications on this hazard were in Chinese, and overlooked outide China.
