The Trustees

The 2016 Appeal.

We’ve identified around 700 plants that we’d like to add to our database, which will improve our coverage of useful plants in non-temperate zones.  This is in response to requests from users and to reflect new information becoming available on plants we haven’t included before.  We also want to improve the structure and usability of our website, particularly with a view to making database searches easier and to encourage more information sharing.  In order to do this in 2016 we need extra funds in addition to our regular level of income.

Plants For A Future (PFAF) is a small not-for-profit UK-based charitable company.  For over fifteen years PFAF has been providing a free on-line information service on edible plants and those with medicinal and other useful properties. Over the past six years we have improved the content and presentation of the site, and in a typical month over 200,000 people access the database.

The trustees of PFAF provide their time and expertise at no cost, but on a part-time basis we also employ specialists in plants and in technical aspects of database and website design and development - people who work for us at modest rates of pay because they are committed to what PFAF is doing.  All this has been paid for mainly using 'windfall' funds received seven years ago when it was decided to sell land originally purchased for an eco-village project, that was never fully developed and could no longer be sustained.  We were fortunate to benefit from an increase in the value of the land, which has become a nature reserve.  We have now used over two thirds of this money.

Apart from donations our only other sources of income are sales of books and copies of the database, and online advertising.  The only year when we did not need to dip into our cash reserves was 2014 when we held the last special appeal for donations.  If we are to improve and extend the database and continue to make it available free of charge, we need your support.  Please give what you can.
